TIPS TO REMEMBER IF YOU HAVE WHEAT ALLERGY

Wheat Allergy is an allergy which gets aggregated in some people when they come ‘in contact’ to wheat. ‘In contact’ means either they consume it in any form or even inhale its fragrance.

• Strictly avoid wheat in food and non-food products.

• Carry Epinephrine wherever you travel.

• In case, you feel you have consumed, that might aggravate your wheat allergy, take a dose of     Epinephrine.

• Always carry a medical card that properly mentions your allergy.

• Your medical card should also mention emergency medical action and contact details of your near and dear ones.

• In case you dine out, make sure you clear your food preferences considering your allergy.

• Read the ingredients before purchasing any processed item.

• Google the ingredient, that is new to your dictionary.

• For non-food items, if ingredients are not mentioned, visit the website, confirm the ingredients and then use them.

• Since wheat is a common ingredient, even when the ingredients of any item don’t include wheat, it is still advisable to reaffirm before consuming it, since there is a great possibility of cross contamination.

Gluten–free foodies a considerable option. Consult your doctor before opting any diet.

• If you specifically identify, the protein you are allergic to, avoid that in other foods as well.

• Cereals

• Pasta

• Hot –Dogs

• Salad- Dressings and Sauces

• Ice – Cream

• Chocolates

• Vegetable Gum

• Natural Flavourings

• Crackers

• Couscous

• Farina

• Semolina

• Modified Food Starch

• Gelatinized Starch

The list is quite big!! But don’t lose heart; you can still savour your favourites. All you have to do is, find wheat – free foods and you won’t miss your favourites.

FOODS FOR WHEAT ALLERGIC PEOPLE

  • Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
  • Unpackaged Meat
  • Corn Tortilla
  • Rice
  • Oats 
  •  Quinoa
  • Sorghum
  • Tapioca
  • Butternut Squash or Sweet Potato Flatbread
  • Cauliflower Bread for Pizza Crust
  • Oopsie, Rye, Sourdough or Ezekiel Bread
  • Corn

But be sure the products made from these grains are gluten free too. For example popcorn is gluten free which are made of corn. But all popcorns are not gluten free such as theatre popcorn and some flavoured popcorns. Please check the ingredients of every packed food before consuming it.
